While seahorses were once considered to be very difficult creatures to keep nowadays they can be great aquarium pets. Seahorses are fantastic creatures to observe in aquaria and seem to have been pulled straight from a fairytale. However if you are considering to have a seahorse aquarium you must know that they are very delicate marine creatures and there are several factors to take into consideration.

Seahorses require a lot of committed attention. They need to be fed often and you cannot miss a day and not feed them. In addition, aquarium maintenance is highly important for the health of the seahorses and they tend to be quite messy creatures.

If you want to keep other types of fish in the tank along with seahorses, then you need to make sure that the additional tank mates are slow and small so that the seahorses are happy.  Fast moving fish make seahorses nervous and tent to steal their food. Also, do not forget that seahorses themselves would make a good meal for many fish. Some fish species that are safe to have in the tank with seahorses are Scooter blennies, Banggai, firefish, pajama cardinals and Royal grammas. Snails and limpets are great for a seahorse aquarium and there are some nudibranchs and mini-stars that could work well.  It is best to leave the seahorses get used to the environment before adding any new tank mates.

Seahorses need a different environment than other marine creatures. The tank needs to be tall as seahorses swim upwards and downwards, and their body has a different structure.  When you choose the decorations in the tank, you need to consider that seahorses are very gentle and therefore try avoiding anything that has many sharp edges that can harm the seahorses. They prefer open space with hitching posts. The better variety in sizes and shapes the happier the seahorses will be.

They need slightly lower temperatures than other marine creature. Seahorses like a fairly turbulence free tank, a low rate and no air bubbles.

Keeping seahorses is quite expensive yet extremely rewarding. Each individual has a unique personality and they are very charming creatures. They have captured the attention of people for hundreds of years with pictures of seahorses dating back in the 1500’s. Now you have the opportunity to have these mythical creatures in your own home.
