A Footballer’s Fish is not just for Christmas…..

  • A Footballer’s Fish is not just for Christmas…..

    January 2010

Manchester City’s Stephen Ireland’s fish tank has been the talk of the tabloids this winter with The Daily Star and The Sun both reporting on the purchase of  his beloved Pineapple fish as a Christmas present. Bought to compliment the hundreds of fish that already inhabit the Premiership footballer’s free standing aquarium, the fish’s unusual pineapple shape appearance has made it a source of tabloid fascination.

The Sorosichthys Ananassa is nicknamed the Pineapple fish due to its yellow coloured body with eye-catching black outlines on the scales forming a pattern that looks similar to that of a pineapple. The hard scales protect the fish whilst a green light is produced around its lower jaw from a small light organ housed there. It is believed this glow changes to red as the fish matures. The fish is found in the waters off the east and west coast of Australia and can grow to up to 25cm in length.

“While most WAGs would love to be seen with a pocket-sized pooch poking out of their designer handbag, that’s not for Jessica.

Instead, before Christmas, Stephen forked out a fortune for a tropical fish that resembles its Little Pineapple Fish name – and it lives with others in a four-metre long fish tank.

“Football  star Stephen Ireland has splashed out a fortune on a tropical fish that looks like a pineapple.

The Manchester City midfielder risked the mirth of team-mates by treating himself to the creature – Latin name sorosichthys ananassa – for Christmas.

It now lives in a 26ft tank in his lounge.”
