Custom made fish tanks – should you choose glass or acrylic?

Custom made fish tanks come in an array of interesting shapes and sizes. Depending on what style you’re wanting to go for, you’ll have the choice of two main materials – glass and acrylic. So why choose one over the other?

    Glass Aquariums

Glass custom made fish tanks have always been more popular than acrylic aquariums. One of the reasons is that glass aquariums are less expensive than the acrylic ones. Glass aquariums are also very difficult to scratch, but when it does scratch it is permanent, so watch out! A substantial amount of pressure with a reasonably hard material is usually required to cause a scratch. So you’re more than likely safe with glass aquarium.

    Acrylic Aquariums

Acrylic aquarium on the other hand scratches very easily comparing to glass aquarium. The aquatic inhabitants of an acrylic tank can even scratch and damage the tank themselves if they have teeth, shells or claws. It is, however, easier to repair if it is scratched with the help of an acrylic polishing kit. The kit is recommended to be used only on the outside of the aquarium and not on the inside of the tank as it can be toxic.

An acrylic aquarium has a much lower risk of breaking than a glass aquarium tank. But of course it is extremely rare for a custom aquarium to break anyway. If the weight of an aquarium is a worry for you, an acrylic aquarium at the same size as a glass aquarium will always weigh less when it is empty. However, most of the weight of an aquarium is in the water, the aquascaping elements and its inhabitants.

If you’re feeling a tad adventurous and thinking outside the box, quite literally, you might want to go for curved custom made fish tanks or a shape completely unique and mind blowing. The world’s your oyster. If you are after something other than the very classic rectangular shape, acrylic is the best option to go for. It is very customizable and there are so many amazing shapes you can create with it.
