Changing from saltwater to freshwater

  • Changing from saltwater to freshwater

    January 2015

Choosing between a freshwater and a saltwater aquarium is always difficult…the striking colours of the sea creatures or the wildness of the lake inhabitants…. If you chose to go for the “Nemo” aquarium but you are considering changing it to a more natural look the good news is that it is totally possible. You can change from a saltwater tank to a freshwater aquarium at any time.

Freshwater aquariums provide an impressive visual whilst requiring a less demanding aquarium maintenance regime and lower operating costs. Water changes are easier and less frequent. If you have professional aquarium maintenance the frequency of visits needed is half the number of the saltwater aquarium. Freshwater aquarium maintenance is therefore less expensive. If you own a saltwater aquarium and you did not realise how important aquarium maintenance is for an aquarium and the cost of it and you want to go for a cheaper option we are here to help.

Aquarium Architecture can transform your saltwater paradise into a freshwater oasis. If you would like to do that on your own here are some expert tips.

The aquariums themselves are not specifically designed for use as either a freshwater or saltwater tank. Therefore, you can use the same tank if you want to change the system type. However, freshwater aquatic creatures cannot live in saltwater set up. All the fish, corals and other tank inhabitants will need to find a new home.

After removing the livestock, the tank needs to be drained and the majority of decorations are useless in the new system as potentially could harm the pH in the freshwater aquarium. Large rocks may be kept but please keep on reading our recommendations in order to create a healthy environment.

Protein skimmer and power heads are not needed in a freshwater tank and can be potentially sold to a saltwater tank owner if they are in good condition.

The tank and the left equipment that is suitable for a freshwater aquarium have to be thoroughly cleaned to remove any salt particles. Vinegar solution is common used.

When the tank is clean, the new set up can be assembled. There are so many stunning aquascaping ideas to choose from that will ensure that the tank will be outstanding.

Water can be added and after the tank has been cycled to ensure the adequate pH, ammonia and nitrite levels, the fish can be introduced.
