We were recently approached by the team at SuperyachtDesign Magazine to give our expertise on “what are the key design and engineering considerations when catering for plant life and pets on board?”

SuperyachtDesign is the authority on large yacht design providing specialist information and insight into the world of super yachts. It features in-depth articles on ground-breaking interior supplies and bespoke, luxury products from around the world as well as reports on the businesses behind top design companies, interviews with experienced and passionate owners, and a showcase of concepts exploring tomorrow’s boundary-pushing builds.

You might think that while on a luxurious yacht you don’t need anything else than the view of the ocean. However, this is not the case. Nowadays, yacht owners wish to create a connection with the natural world on board going beyond opening the interior to the ocean and many choose to incorporate plant and animal life into the interior design.

The idea of installing a yacht aquarium is totally feasible.  Aquarium Architecture has installed many different aquatic systems on board. However, there are some things to take into consideration are:

    • Acrylic vs Glass!

We recommend acrylic not glass aquariums due to the instability of the water and weather conditions.

    • Location of the aquarium?

When installing a yacht aquarium on board you need to be precautious that the load of the tank won’t affect the performance of the yacht. Other things such as heat and light should also be taken into consideration when choosing the location. Too much heat can affect the health of the fish. In addition, too much light can create algae if you go for a freshwater aquarium. Also, it might be a good idea not to have an aquarium next to a sound system as fish don’t really like too much noise. Aquarium Architecture can help you choose the best location for the fish tank and you can contact us here

    • Back up filtration equipment.

In case of anything goes wrong there has to be a plan B. With residential or commercial aquariums we are just a call away in case of an emergency. Yet, with a yacht aquarium the situation is different. If the boat is in the middle of the ocean and something goes wrong to the filtration equipment, all the fish and live creatures will die without a second filtration system.

    • There has to be a special electric system and a battery backup for yacht aquarium.
    • Possibility of pumping water from underneath the boat
