Fish Tank Maintenance is an important aspect in keeping an aquarium healthy and looking striking.
Fish Tank Maintenance depends on the type of the aquarium you have, saltwater or freshwater, the size of your aquarium and how many fish inhabit in the tank.
As a general rule saltwater aquarium needs more maintenance than a freshwater aquarium. We recommend aquarium maintenance weekly or minimum twice a month for a saltwater tank and every two weeks, minimum every four weeks for a freshwater one. In total there should be a minimum of 13 aquarium maintenances scheduled per year.
The process usually takes between 1 ½ hours to 2 hours per each 1000 litres. One of our aquarium maintenance engineers will come to your location, on a date agreed by you and will clean the glass, the equipment and the substrate (sand/gravel). The gravel cleaning can be slightly complicated with freshwater aquariums that are heavy planted. In this case, gravel cleaning can be quite disturbing and can even damage the plants and this is why is best to use an aquarium maintenance service. If you choose to do it by yourself a tip would be to only clean the very top layer of gravel in the heavy planted area. The debris that will build beneath the plants can actually be useful nutrients for them.
Approximately 20% off the water will be removed during the maintenance process. New water will be added after the cleaning takes place. This stage is trickier with saltwater aquariums, as the salinity is vital in order to have a healthy aquarium. Almost all the saltwater aquariums require professional aquarium maintenance or significant time investment from the owner. Adding water in the freshwater tank is less complicated, the fish being less sensitive to change and used to harsher environments.
